Africa Learns from Africa on Early Disability Identification
|
|
At Likuni Mission Hospital, a simple but urgent question brought Africa together:
how can we identify developmental difficulties and disabilities earlier
and connect children to the support they need?
|
During the 2026 African Disability Collaboration Summit Learning Visit,
more than 30 organisations and government departments explored Malawi’s
progress in bringing developmental monitoring into routine child health
services. From policy discussions to practical lessons shared across borders,
the visit showed that Africa already holds valuable knowledge and that stronger
early identification can begin by learning from one another.

When Africa Came Together to Talk Solutions
What happens when caregivers, parents, service providers, researchers and government
leaders from across Africa gather to shape a better future for children with disabilities?
At the 2026 ADC Continental Conference, the conversation moved beyond challenges
to focus on action. Participants shared African-led solutions, explored the vital role
caregivers play in early identification and rehabilitation, and discussed what it will
take to finance and sustain early support for every child.
From the main stage to smaller discussion rooms, different voices brought different
experiences, ideas and solutions to the table.
What ideas emerged, and what could they mean for the future?

Outreach and awareness

Sometimes, Help Just Needs to Come Closer
Praise, Glory and Tamandani had been struggling to see the blackboard.
Then, one day, help came to their community. Escorted by their teachers,
the three Standard 5 learners came to the ADC Outreach and Awareness Day
looking for answers.
What happened next gave them more than clearer vision. Their story was one
of many. More than 1,400 people came to the outreach to access health,
rehabilitation, education and other specialised services brought closer
to the community.
Read the story of how a day of early action changed what was possible
for children and families.

From commitment to action

Africa’s Commitments Pillar
Ideas were shared. Difficult questions were asked. Lives were touched.
But the 2026 ADC Summit was never meant to end with words. At Kapedzera
Primary School, the commitments made during the Summit took a physical form.
A commitment pillar was built to carry the promises made by partners,
organisations and leaders to strengthen early action and rehabilitation
for children with disabilities.
Because a commitment is only powerful when we can see it, remember it and act on it.
Read how Africa turned its commitments into a promise that will stand at Kapedzera.
